In this cafes the waitresses are dressed in maid costumes and act as a servant to the costumer, whom they refer to as master and mistresses in a private home. The demographic of the Maid Cafe was originally chosen to appeal to the male crowd. Therefore, it might feel just a little strange for a female to visit this cafes. The first permanent Maid Cafe was established in Akihabara Tokyo Japan, in March 2001 ane becoming increasingly popular. For example, this cafe has loud speakers (on a roof top balcony) from which it tries to attract customers.

The maid costume varies from cafe to cafe but most are based upon the costume of French maids. At maid cafes, the maids and the customers can enjoy fun communication, but there are rules that one must be aware of. For example, depending on the restaurant, there are rules like “Don’t touch the maids or Don’t ask for their contact information.” Also, there are usually rules against taking photos inside the restaurant. If you want to take a picture with a maid, you must ask for the cheki service.
